There are three main sections here. First is the list of layers on the left. This is where you will be defining which objects get animated. The area on the right is the timeline. This is where you will be setting points to start and stop animations. Finally, the area on the bottom is the list of controls. Most of these are self-explanatory play, stop, etc.
The button at the far bottom right of the palette allows you to work with frames instead of the timeline. Animations in Photoshop are layer driven. Each layer on your document will show up in the list on the left side of the Animation palette.
To see the options for animating a specific layer, click the arrow next to the layer name. For most non-text layers only the Position, Opacity and Style options will appear.
Before we get into how to use the timeline in the Photoshop animation palette, you should understand the concept of keyframing. Years ago the top animators at Disney would draw a few important panels for a scene key frames and the let the lower paid animators fill in all of the frames between a process called tweening.
Basically all you have to do is set the initial state of the layer along with its ultimate destination and Photoshop will fill in the rest. To do this, you use keyframes. For example, if you want a layer to change position, you would position the layer, set a keyframe, move the layer to its final destination and set another keyframe. I threw together the simple image below to use as the basis for our animation.
What we want to create is a sort of parallax effect with the dots slowly moving by the text. The first bokeh layer is on top of the text and will animate at the fastest speed.To animate a property is to change its value over time.
In Premiere Pro, effect properties can be animated by assigning keyframes to them. A keyframe marks the point in time where you specify a value, such as spatial position, opacity, or audio volume. To create a change in a property over time, you set at least two keyframes—one keyframe for the value at the beginning of the change, and another keyframe for the value at the end of the change.
Premiere Pro then creates a gradual change in values between keyframes, called interpolation. You can add keyframes in the Timeline or the Effect Controls panel at the current time. Use the Toggle Animation button in the Effect Controls panel to activate the keyframing process.
Note: To create keyframes in a track or on a clip, it is not necessary to enable keyframe display. If you want to add and adjust keyframes in a Timeline panel, make keyframes visible for the video or audio track. If the keyframes are not visible by default, click the Wrench icon in the Timeline panel, and select Show Video Keyframes.
Note: If you are adding keyframes to a Fixed effect Motion, Opacity, or Volume in a Timeline panel, you can skip step 3. In the Effect Controls panel, click the triangle to expand the effect that you want to add keyframes to, and then click the Toggle Animation icon to activate keyframes for an effect property. Effect Controls panel Click the triangle to expand the effect property and display its Value and Velocity graphs. You can add a keyframe anywhere on a graph using the Selection or Pen tool.
Note: To add keyframes, it is not necessary to use a modifier key with the Pen tool. However, the modifier key is needed with the Selection tool. If you want to modify or copy a keyframe, first select it in a Timeline panel.

Unselected keyframes appear hollow; selected keyframes appear solid. Also, segments automatically adjust when you change the keyframes that define their end points. Note: When you position the Selection or Pen tool over a keyframe, the pointer appears with a Keyframe icon. Note: In the Effect Controls panel, you can also use the Selection tool to drag and select multiple keyframes.
To select all keyframes for a property in the Effect Controls panel, click the layer property name. For example, click Position to select all the Position keyframes for a layer. If you no longer need a keyframe, you can easily delete it from an effect property in either the Effect Controls or a Timeline panel. You can remove all keyframes at once or deactivate keyframes for the effect property. In the Effect Controls, when you deactivate keyframes with the Toggle Animation button, existing keyframes are deleted and no new keyframes can be created until you reactivate keyframes.
Effect Controls panel only To delete all keyframes for an effect property, click the Toggle Animation button to the left of the name of the effect or property.
How to Animate Using Photoshop
When prompted to confirm your decision, click OK. Note: When you deactivate the Toggle Animation button, keyframes for that property are permanently removed and the value of that property becomes the value at the current time. You cannot restore deleted keyframes by reactivating the Toggle Animation button. The Effect Controls panel and Timeline panels let you adjust the timing and values of keyframes, but they work in different ways.
The Effect Controls panel displays all effect properties, keyframes, and interpolation methods at once. Clips in a Timeline panel show only one effect property at a time. In the Effect Controls panel, you have complete control over keyframe values. In a Timeline panel, you have limited control. However, you can make keyframe adjustments without moving to the Effect Controls panel. The graphs in the Timeline and Effect Controls panels display the values of each keyframe and the interpolated values between keyframes.Stephen G.

In this article, I will share several advanced techniques to help you create complex animations.
Because the topics and techniques in this article are advanced, a moderate level of Photoshop knowledge is expected. The frame timeline is for frame-by-frame animation and can be very limiting.
It generally works by converting the layers in your Layers panel to individual frames. The video timeline allows for keyframe animation — which is an animation process in which you define key points of animation along a timeline and Photoshop will interpret the in-between frames to create a cohesive animation.
As you probably noticed from the image above, the video timeline shows a representation of layers in the Layers panel. Each layer in the timeline has a dropdown panel that exposes the layer properties these are the properties that can be animated.
To animate a layer property, simply click the stopwatch icon, which enables keyframe animation. Notice that a keyframe is automatically placed at the current time indicator.
Move the current time indicator to another point in the timeline and reposition the layer. Again, another keyframe will automatically be added to the timeline. Playing back the animation shows how the object on the canvas moves from one position to the next. Because different layer types have different properties to animate, pay attention to which layer types are being used.
The standard pixel layer is a layer that contains pixel information. This is the most common and most basic layer in Photoshop. Layer properties include:. Adding a layer mask or vector mask to any layer will introduce additional properties specific to that mask.
A shape layer contains a shape whether from one of the shape tools or the Pen tool or a line segment. Because shapes and line segments are built with vector mask information, those mask properties will appear in addition to the other layer properties. A text layer contains editable text.

Photoshop does not have a separate Extended offering. All features in Photoshop Extended are part of Photoshop. It covers my workflow, beginning with creating initial sketches in Photoshop which provide me with enough information to begin the 3D process. That allows the creation of a more realistic illustration using several specialized software packages for each step of the process.
In this first stage, I start by dropping some ideas into the canvas. The main purpose is to stay loose which helps me to focus more on composition and storytelling. It's a more private or personal step where all of the fast sketches are only to ground the ideas. After that, I start to refine some more of the previous ideas that I have developed. The goal here is to try to achieve a more grounded result by introducing more elements into the composition, such as the background in this case and more dynamism in the characters, this will start to help me building a more readable concept.
Black and white sketching is useful to evaluate early the shapes and values that you may want for the final image. Thanks to DAZthe posing phase becomes more easy and efficient, mainly because the models that it has are already rigged. It's just matter of creating a really cool pose that is also believable and helps to tell the story.
In Marvelous I start by importing a new model which is in "A" pose, this is super helpful because you can easily use the symmetry modifier to create all your garments faster.
In this process I always try to start by creating bigger shapes, then medium and finally the details of each one of the pieces. Inside ZBrushat least for these characters, I created different props like the boots and the mask that covers the neck and the chin, also the weapons. Mainly this type of work is done with DynaMesh and the sculpting techniques with the standard brushes such as Clay Build-up, Dam Standard, Clay, etc.
For other props like the weapons, the process is more efficient with ZModeler and Live Boleans. I also split my meshes here into different sub-tools depending on the type of material that I will use in Keyshot. Here it's important to remember that this is use for concept, which means that some details can be added after in Photoshop more easily.
In Keyshot the process that I use is really basic, just by dragging and dropping different basic materials with minor tweaks here and there is more than enough to get a decent result. The lighting is provided by an HDRI, It's important that it has a great balance between shadow and light.
Even with this it's good to have some pins that will help you to emphasize the intention that you want to add to your composition. I don't spend so much time here; the core of my process is inside Photoshop.
Always remember that this is a concept. As you saw in the latest image, I usually select all the render passes from my Keyshot render options. That's because sometimes I'm not sure about the exact passes that I may want. In the image below you can see the most common renders that almost every time I work with. In this first part I basically started to mix all my renders from Keyshot and then start exploring the final details that I would like to have in my final image.
Using different texture images, such a grunge textures for the garments and some photos from real locations I build the background and the ambience. After I had a good start with the composition itself, here I'm more focused on the little details that make my image more believable, like the character's hair and face.
This is more a "zoomed in" working process, where my goal is to build the main areas of my composition with more details and also fixed the ones that I think that don't look how I think they should.
For this last part, my goal is to make the image more atmospheric, that's why I like to use some fog, lens flares, and ambient effects.This can help automate some animation tasks and also allows for animation of preexisting images and videos.
