This goes hand in hand with philosophies such as agile development and microservices architectures. It reduces the risk of human error, particularly in crisis situations, where tensions run high and people make mistakes. There are multiple solutions to address this idea, but recently AWS has put forward their own suite of products, to make your life easier if you already use AWS for other reasons.
Docker adds yet another layer of stability to your builds and deploys, because you package the whole environment along with the code. This means no more "it works on my machine" issues. If you're using Docker, it runs everywhere the same way. So you see that there are multiple ways you can setup a CodePipeline pipeline. The last part deploy provider is necessarily an AWS-backed service because, after all, AWS isn't about to launch a product to help you deploy to its cloud competitors.
A Build Definition Filewhich is called buildspec. A file specifying where to fetch the Docker image file, which you will use on ElasticBeanstalk. This is called Dockerrun. It also needs to be in the repo root. Under source providerselect "GitHub" and select the repo and branch you want. There are no executions yet, as this pipeline has just been created.
Choose a name for your repo and note down the Repository URI that appears below:. Sample Repository URI. This URI will be used in file Dockerrun. COM Home. Table of Contents. The following information is organized by CodePipeline action type and can help you configure CodePipeline to integrate with the products and services you use. Amazon S3 is storage for the internet. You can use Amazon S3 to store and retrieve any amount of data at any time, from anywhere on the web. You can configure CodePipeline to use a versioned Amazon S3 bucket as the source stage for your code.
Create the bucket and enable versioning on it. Then you can create a pipeline that uses the bucket as part of a source action in a stage.
Each source action has a corresponding event rule. This event rule starts your pipeline when a change occurs in the source. See General Integrations with CodePipeline.
CodeCommit is a version control service that you can use to privately store and manage assets such as documents, source code, and binary files in the cloud. You can configure CodePipeline to use a branch in a CodeCommit repository as the source stage for your code.
Create the repository and associate it with a working directory on your local machine. Then you can create a pipeline that uses the branch as part of a source action in a stage. You can connect to the CodeCommit repository by either creating a pipeline or editing an existing one.
This event rule starts your pipeline when a change occurs in the repository. You can configure CodePipeline to use a GitHub repository as the source stage for your code. You must have previously created a GitHub account and at least one GitHub repository.
You can connect to the GitHub repository by either creating a pipeline or editing an existing one. The first time you add a GitHub repository to a pipeline, you are prompted to authorize CodePipeline access to your repositories. If you create or edit your pipeline in the console, CodePipeline creates a GitHub webhook that starts your pipeline when a change occurs in the repository.Tags: amazon web servicesawsaws codepipelinecontinuous deliverycontinuous deploymentdeployment pipelinedevops.
Deploying Docker Containers Using an AWS CodePipeline for DevOps
AWS CodePipeline is a managed service that orchestrates workflow for continuous integrationcontinuous deliveryand continuous deployment. With CodePipeline, you define a series of stages composed of actions that perform tasks in a release process from a code commit all the way to production. It also integrates with other AWS and non-AWS services and tools such as version-control, build, test, and deployment.
It stores artifacts for all pipelines in that region in this bucket. If the CodePipeline bucket has already been created in S3, you can refer to this bucket when creating pipelines outside the console or you can create or reference another S3 bucket.
Figure 1 shows an encrypted CodePipeline Artifact zip file in S3. At the first stage in its workflow, CodePipeline obtains source code, configuration, data, and other resources from a source provider.
It stores a zipped version of the artifacts in the Artifact Store. In example in this post, these artifacts are defined as Output Artifacts for the Source stage in CodePipeline. The next stage consumes these artifacts as Input Artifacts. This relationship is illustrated in Figure 2. Figure 2 — CodePipeline Artifacts and S3. There are 4 steps to deploying the solution: preparing an AWS account, launching the stack, testing the deployment, and walking through CodePipeline and related resources in the solution.
Each is described below. CloudFormation allows you to use a simple text file to model and provision, in an automated and secure manner, all the resources needed for your applications across all regions and accounts. This file serves as the single source of truth for your cloud environment. Click the Edit button, then select the Edit pencil in the Source action of the Source stage as shown in Figure 3.
As shown in Figure 3, you see the name of Output artifact 1 is SourceArtifacts. This name is used by CodePipeline to store the Source artifacts in S3. The Output artifact SourceArtifacts is used as an Input artifact in the Deploy stage in this example as shown in Figure 4 — see Input artifacts 1.
The next set of commands provide access to the artifacts that CodePipeline stores in Amazon S3. The command below displays all of the S3 bucket in your AWS account. This displays all the objects from this S3 bucket — namely, the CodePipeline Artifact folders and files. Next, create a new directory. Your S3 URL will be completely different than the location below.
The contents will look similar to Figure 8. This includes the Input and Output Artifacts.
In this section, you will walkthrough the essential code snippets from a CloudFormation template that generates a pipeline in CodePipeline. All of these services can consume zip files. For example, when using CloudFormation as a CodePipeline Deploy provider for a Lambda function, your CodePipeline action configuration might look something like this:. This enabled the next step to consume this zip file and execute on it.
Below, the command run from the buildspec for the CodeBuild resource refers to a folder that does not exist in S3: samples-wrong. When provisioning this CloudFormation stack, you will not see the error. In a nutshell, that means it orchestrates all of the necessary build, test, approval and deployment steps necessary to take code from source to production.
While not as mature as some of its competitors, such as JenkinsGitLab and Travis CI to name a fewit still has many redeeming qualities due to its tight integration with other services in the AWS ecosystem. Like most AWS services, CodePipeline can take a bit of configuration and tinkering to get working properly. One challenge that I ran into recently was setting up CodePipeline to work with multiple git branches.
I tend to follow the GitFlow branching model and was scratching my head on how to get CodePipeline to work on all of my feature and release branches. The way to make it work depends on your git repository.
GitHub Actions vs. AWS CodePipeline
If you are using AWS CodeCommityou will have to create a Lambda trigger that creates a new pipeline for each branch. A CodePipeline source is something that starts the pipeline automagically and does not require an input artifact. You are encouraged to change the Terminal command --stack-name value example-s3 and the --parameter-overrides value for S3BucketNameArtifacts artifacts. However, ensure that you use the same parameter overrides in all of the steps. You are encouraged to change the Terminal command --stack-name value example-codepipeline and the --parameter-overrides values for S3BucketNameArtifacts artifacts.

After template. CodePipeline environment variables do not contain any information from git e. You will have to preserve this information on your own e.Continuous Integration with Jenkins on Amazon EC2 [1 / 5]
You must have the requisite permissions to the repository in order to create a webhook i. Using CodeCommit as your git repository affords you with a couple of options for configuring CodePipeline to work with multiple branches:. When you run the Terminal command a new repository named example-repository will be created. You are encouraged to update the files accordingly if you want to use an existing CodeCommit repository. When a branch is created, Lambda will deploy the version of template.
A pipeline will not be deployed if this file is missing from the branch. If any branches already exist in the repository when you create the trigger, you must manually deploy the template. At the time of writing this article, some events in the CodeCommit web console do not trigger Lambda e. You should only create and delete git branches remotely e. This article describes how to configure the integration between GitHub and Azure Pipelines. If you're new to Azure Pipelines integration with GitHub, follow the steps in Create your first pipeline to get your first pipeline working with a GitHub repository, and then come back to this article to learn more about configuring and customizing the integration between GitHub and Azure Pipelines.
GitHub and Azure Pipelines are two independent services that integrate well together. Each of them have their own organization and user management.
This section explains how to replicate the organization and users from GitHub to Azure Pipelines. GitHub's structure consists of organizations and user accounts that contain repositories. See GitHub's documentation. Azure DevOps' structure consists of organizations that contain projects. See Plan your organizational structure. For example:. Your GitHub users do not automatically get access to Azure Pipelines.
You must add your GitHub users explicitly to Azure Pipelines. If your GitHub repository grants permission to teams, you can create matching teams in the Teams section of your Azure DevOps project settings. Then, add the teams to the security groups above, just like users.
Using AWS CodePipeline and open source tools for at-scale infrastructure deployment
To grant permissions to users or teams for specific pipelines in an Azure DevOps project, follow these steps:. The repository in which the YAML file is present is called self repository.
By default, this is the repository that your pipeline builds. You can later configure your pipeline to check out a different repository or multiple repositories. To learn how to do this, see multi-repo checkout. You create a new pipeline by first selecting GitHub for repository type, and then one of the repositories you have access to.Skip to content.

Parameters enable us to use custom values to your template each time you create or update a stack. Github token name ii. Github username iii. Github repository name iv. Github source branch name. It is in 3 parts, the first one been CodePipelinethis describes the pipeline from Github and using the infrastructure CloudFormation template to setup staging and production environment, the second CodeBuildthis also describes the resources used to build the source and the last part of resources describes all the IAM policies needed.
Outputs which is not mandatory, is used to fetch values that can be reused in other templates. Build the Docker image and tag the image both as latest and with the Git commit ID. How to test this? After committing the changes as we can see :. We left of the previous part with docker images uploaded to ECR after source code was pulled from Github and built.
Next step, set up an EKS infrastructure to pick the docker images, set up the infrastructure on EKS to deploy the application. Since our source code is made up a javago and html microservices.
Putting everything together we have the infrastructure CloudFormation template.
